Thathkala and the Birth Chart

Two charts. One astrological system. Two opposite starting points.

One chart answers a single question. The other maps a lifetime spanning decades.

Same tradition. Same underlying method. Two different starting points. That split begins with what each chart actually is.

Start with the Thathkala Kendaraya. The name itself explains the method. Thathkala means instant, present-moment. Kendaraya means chart. Sri Lankan tradition describes it as the chart cast for the moment a client presents the question to the astrologer. Astrologers construct it two ways. First, the querentQuerentThe person asking. In horary the querent supplies the number, so the chart belongs to the question rather than to a birth.CopyCopied selects a number between 1 and 249. That number fixes the ascendant directly. No sky-watching is required. Second, the astrologer casts the chart for the exact moment and location the question is taken up for judgment. Either way, the requirement is the same. The question must be genuine, held with real emotional investment. Casual or testing queries, practitioners hold, produce no valid chart. Its core advantage is simple. No birth data is required.

Now the Upan Welawen Hadana Kendaraya. Literally, it means “the chart made from the birth time.” It is also called the Janma KendarayaJanma KendarayaThe same birth chart under its Sanskrit-derived names, also the Rasi chart or the Kundli, and in Sinhala janma pathraya, uppanna kendaraya or handahana.CopyCopied, the Rasi chart, or the Kundli. In Sinhala it goes by janma pathraya, uppanna kendaraya, and handahana. Sri Lankan astrologers call it the main horoscope. It is cast from verified birth date, time, and place. It maps the LagnaLagnaThe ascendant: the degree rising over the eastern horizon. These are then read for character, life pattern, and event timing across decades. But its accuracy depends on one thing. The precision of the recorded birth time determines how reliable the chart is.

One chart needs no data at all. The other needs it down to the minute. That precision requirement is where the deeper method begins.

Both charts run on the same system. It is called Krishnamurti Paddhati, named for Professor K.S. KrishnamurtiK.S. KrishnamurtiFounder of Krishnamurti Paddhati. Gondhalekar recalled Krishnamurti himself gesturing at the sub lord’s star lord in his own Readers, reinforcing Gondhalekar’s direction.CopyCopied. Those subs follow a fixed sequence, the 120-year Vimshottari cycle. The order runs Ketu seven years, Venus twenty, the Sun six, the Moon ten, Mars seven, Rahu eighteen, Jupiter sixteen, Saturn nineteen, and Mercury seventeen. Each planet’s span becomes a proportional slice of every nakshatra. That slice is the sub.

That sub-lord method is the engine both charts run. Both rest on the sidereal zodiacSidereal zodiacA zodiac measured against the fixed stars rather than the moving equinox. Jagannathhora.com describes it as a correction of a systematic error of about 6′ in the older KP figure. It places KP New at 24°07′52″ against Lahiri’s 24°07′47″, a gap of about +5″, as of 1 January 2026. KP is, by design, a simplification. It relies instead on the sub-lord system alone. The trade-off is well known among practitioners. Parashari answers what kind of life someone will lead. KP answers whether one specific event will happen, and when. Parashari also tolerates birth-time error far better than KP. This is why the common practitioner synthesis goes like this. Parashari for analysis. KP for timing.

The arithmetic never changes. Only the starting instant does. And that single variable, birth moment versus question moment, is exactly where construction begins to diverge.

The sharpest divide is the ascendant. In a natal chartNatal astrologyReading a chart cast for a person's birth moment, as against a chart cast for the moment a question was asked. This point shifts roughly one degree every four minutes. In a number-based horary chart, there is no horizon calculation at all. The querent’s number, between 1 and 249, fixes the ascendant directly within a specific sign-star-sub segment. Put simply, the natal Lagna answers where the horizon stood at the moment of birth. The horary Lagna answers which sub-division the question itself points to.

That 249-number system has precise math behind it. Twenty-seven nakshatras, each split into nine subs, gives 243 segments. Eleven sign boundaries fall inside those 243. As paramarsh.app explains, five already align with a sub boundary. But six cut through the middle of one. The ruling sign lord changes across each of those six. So each one splits into two. Add those six extra segments to 243, and the total reaches 249. Number 1 marks the first sub of Ashwini, at 0° Aries. Number 249 marks the final sub of Revati, at 30° Pisces. As an illustration, the number 145 commonly falls near the end of Libra, in the Vishakha segment, in published KP horary tables.

The natal chart carries no such shortcut. Date fixes the planetary positions. Place fixes the Placidus cusp geometry. Time fixes both at once. This is why time is the single most sensitive of the three. Its accuracy depends entirely on precision. One chart is built from a number. The other is built, and can be broken, by a matter of minutes. Both, though, are read the same way.

Once the chart is built, one factor decides the outcome. That factor is the Cuspal Sub Lord, or CSLCuspal sub lord (CSL)The sub lord of a specific house cusp. It decides whether the matter that house represents is promised to happen at all.CopyCopied. Krishnamurti’s own dictum defines the hierarchy. The planet is the source. Ruling Planets confirm the verdict. This is a fixed seven-slot chain read at the moment of judgment. The slots are the day lord, the ascendant’s sign, star, and sub lords, and the Moon’s sign, star, and sub lords. The ascendant sub lord carries the most weight. The day lord carries the least. Only the day lord holds steady for the full day. The Moon’s lords shift through the day. The ascendant sub lord can change within minutes. When a planet appears in more than one slot, it is the strongest Ruling Planet in the chart. One widely used shortcut is called the Gulbarga ruleThe Gulbarga ruleA widely used horary shortcut: the chosen number's sub lord has to appear as the Moon's or the ascendant's star lord among that day's Ruling Planets.CopyCopied. It holds that a horary “yes” requires the chosen number’s sub lord to match the Moon’s or the ascendant’s star lord among the Ruling Planets that day. The same Ruling Planets also anchor rectification and event timing. When they overlap an event’s own significators, the timing is confirmed.

None of these tools work in isolation. The CSL decides whether an event is promised. The significators identify which planets can deliver it. For the event to actually occur in a given period, that period’s dasha lord must itself be one of those significators. This match is confirmed by transit and by the Ruling Planets.

The CSL renders the verdict. The Ruling Planets confirm it. Together they set up exactly how each chart applies it.

That verdict mechanism applies differently depending on the chart. Horary excels at narrow, urgent questions. Practitioners call it the gold standard for lost articles and missing persons. For a lost item, the eleventh cusp sub lord must signify houses 2, 6, and 11 for recovery. The second house represents movable possessions. The twelfth house represents loss. In theft specifically, the sixth cusp sub lord decides the outcome instead. A connection to 2, 6, and 11 means the thief is caught and the goods recovered. A connection to 7 and 12 means permanent loss to an outsider. Direction comes from the sign of the second house’s ruler. Its placement points to the quality of the location. The natal chart works across decades, not days. Career draws on houses 2, 6, and 10. The 11th house is added when the question is about gains or landing a job. Houses 1, 5, and 9 signal someone about to leave a job. Marriage draws on 2, 7, and 11, governed by the seventh CSL. Health splits the vitality question from the disease question. The Ascendant covers vitality. The 6th house covers disease. Houses 1, 5, and 11 cover cure. Houses 6, 8, and 12 cover a prolonged illness. Longevity rests on the Ascendant sub lord and houses 1, 3, and 8. The Vimshottari Dasha sequences them into a single life blueprint. It unfolds matter by matter across the full 120-year cycle.

One chart answers today’s question. The other times a lifetime. In Sri Lanka, that lifetime is shaped by a distinct cultural layer.

In Sri Lanka, both names are literal descriptions, not metaphors. Sri Lankan practice adds two layers KP itself doesn’t use. One is nimithiNimithiOmens read at the moment the question is asked. It retains the Navamsa and the Hora alongside the sub-lord reading. This is a trace of its older Parashari-Prashna roots. KP’s own 1-to-249 method has been taught in Sinhala since 2016. But it remains a niche import beside the dominant Parashari-and-nekath mainstream. No single prominent Sri Lankan KP teacher or Sinhala-language KP channel has yet emerged as the face of the practice.

It is keyed to the dasha calendar roughly twenty-five years ahead. That is centuries-old practice. What has changed recently is the machinery underneath both charts.

Modern software has automated what once took hours by hand. This includes the sub, sub-sub, significator, dasha, and Ruling Planet calculations for both chart types. Free desktop tools like Jagannatha Hora, built by P.V.R. Narasimha Rao, compute Placidus houses, the KP ayanamsa, and full sub-lord tables. The recent trend is AI-generated narrative layers. These turn raw sub-lord and Ruling Planet data into written predictions. Some also give automated verdicts that score a cusp’s promise as a percentage. One recent entrant, Lumin (lumin.guru), positions itself against the simpler end of that trend. Rather than wrapping a static chart library with a chatbot, it runs, by its own description, on a live MCP (Model Context Protocol)MCP (Model Context Protocol)An open protocol that lets an agent call a server's tools directly, so each question runs the calculation it needs instead of reading a stored template.CopyCopied server. This server routes each question to the specific KP calculation tools the scenario calls for. For instance, it directs a marriage question to the significators of houses 2, 7, and 11. It computes the sub-lord and Ruling Planet math per query rather than pulling from a pre-written template. It also surfaces which tools fired for each answer. But every one of these tools, Lumin included, runs the identical engine described so far. They differ only in whether the user enters birth details or a horary number. Practitioners who use them treat the AI narrative as a drafting aid layered over the computed sub-lord data, not as independent authority.

The tools change. The method underneath doesn’t. One question remains. Which chart, and when.

Practitioners recommend using both. Natal charts work for the life blueprint. Horary charts work for pressing single questions. For a complete picture, they add Parashari analysis alongside KP for the timing. The working rule is simple. Without reliable birth data, use horary. With birth data confirmed to within a few minutes, use natal. Treat any verdict as provisional until that confirmation holds.

It’s worth noting, too, that much of what circulates online about KP sits on commercial astrology and software-vendor sites. These sites have an incentive to overstate accuracy. Claims of “100 percent precision” are marketing, not measured results. This is, in the end, a traditional predictive system, not a scientifically validated one. This account describes how practitioners use it. It is not a claim that it works.
